Thank You for coming to the 2013 Las Vegas Veterans Parade .. 11/11/13
Alan Stock of KDWN Radio and Vegas TV
2013 marked the 18th year of the Las Vegas Veterans Day Parade and my 15th year as the MC. This year was second to none.
Thanks to a year-long planning process this was perhaps the most fluid Veterans Day Parade we have ever experienced.
First and foremost, the two parade co-chairs, Bill Stojack and Lenny Wenson were tireless in their organizing the parade from start to finish. There is no comparison.
However, I've got to mention that along with Bill and Lenny, long time parade sponsor Humana state director Dixon Keller equalled their energy, effort and resourcefulness leading up to and including the entire day of the parade. Without these three men, we would not have had a 2013 Veterans Day Parade. A special thanks goes out to Randy Widener for his annual assistance as a spotter for the announcers.
John Howland with DeWalt Tools stepped up to the plate this year as our newest corporate sponsor which allowed us to have the necessary number of Metro officers and porta-potties…both a necessity. Another main sponsor of the parade is Beasley Broadcasting, represented by Newstalk 720 KDWN and 105.7, The Oasis.
We've had some great performers singing the National Anthem in the past. This year was far and above everything I had hoped for after Pat Boone joined us two years ago and Terry Fator's appearance last year. Frankie Scinta and Janine Valentine with the Scintas (currently performing downtown at The D) were incredible with their rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and a song by Randy Newman honoring the flag. Ellie Smith sang one of the most moving renditions of God Bless America that I have ever heard. I inquired as to what she did in real life and was told she was a high school student. Ellie Smith will wind up singing on the strip…my prediction, so please write it down.
Three of our four congressional representatives, Joe Heck, Dina Titus and Stephen Horsford marched to honor veterans.
This year we honored the United States Air Force and to that end Brigadier General Stephen N. Whiting, vice commander U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis AFB and his wife joined us on the review stand for the entire parade.
Also on the review stand Steve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney, Steve Sisolak, Clark County Commission President, Judge Bill Kephart and Drew Dondero, The D, Vice-President of Operations.
The invocation was superbly delivered by Father Bill Kenny who is the pastor of the Pastor of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Chaplain at Bishop Gorman High School.
As I mentioned, this is my 15th year as MC of the Veterans Day Parade. Co-hosting with me for the 3rd year was Connie Breeze with our sister station, 105.7, The Oasis. Joining Connie me and this year was another incredible professional, Les Krifaton, the weather guy from KVVU, Fox 5. It is so good to share the stage with professionals of their caliber.
I want to thank all of the entrees who participated in the parade from active military, veterans, families of those who never made it back from combat, the myriad number of high schools with ROTC units, the community organizations who marched in support of honoring this day and to the many, many citizens who turned out to make this the largest Veterans Day Parade in the United States after New York…the largest west of the Mississippi.
We've got to thank God for bringing us all together and for providing the most pristine weather we have ever had for a Veterans Day Parade.
If you liked the parade this year, we are already planning the parade for 2014 and it promises to be even bigger and better.
